I was sad, but unable to go the last 2 days due to sickness and I ran out of money in my grocery budget of $100.00 for the super doubles week.

I think that I did a really great job stocking up on items that I know my family will need and I have us stocked up for at least over a month.

One important thing that I teach in my class is you must stock up on items to last you 6-8 weeks, so that you will not run out and pay full price for an item when it is at it’s highest price. Since you have already paid the rock bottom price for your items, you want to get as many as you can, or shall I say as many as you have room for. One challenge when stockpiling may be storage.

Does having a deep freezer really save you money? Keep in mind that everyone has different freezer needs, different meals that their families like and not need more storage room in their freezer.

Things to freeze that you can stock up on:

• milk
• bread
• vegetables
• fruit
• meat
• butter
• pizza
• frozen dinners
• cheese, and so much more.

Last week was Super Doubles at Harris Teeter and they had a great sale on Smart Balance milk-on sale $3.00; with most of us having the manufacturer coupon from the Sunday Newspaper for $1.50 off that doubled, makes the milk FREE! Great way to stock up on milk, especially when it is FREE! Can’t buy too many FREE milks, without a deep freeze, right? Unless your family can drink it all before it expires. Also, Smart Balance milk tastes GREAT! Now that I have given some great ideas and ways to save by having a deep freezer, will you save up for one?

Now if you are a family of 4 and you stock up on bread, let’s say you buy 8 loafs to last you 8 weeks. Keep 1 out and freeze 7 loaves; to do this you would need a deep freezer. Bread takes up a lot of space, but it is well worth it when you can buy a loaf for $0.50, instead of paying $3.99 for one.  Also, if you have vegetables with each meal, 7 days a week, 4 weeks in a month, that would be a total of 28 bags of frozen vegetables, and there is no way that would all fit in the refrigerator freezer. Plus, if you are like me and wait until I see a BOGO deal and match it up with a coupon, I can buy a bag of vegetables for .24-.50 a bag. That is when I love to stock up!

Another great tip would be if your family cooks in bulk, you can eat dinner and freeze the rest in gallon size zip lock freezer bags. All you would need to do to recreate the meal is pull it out of the freezer and nuke it in the microwave, and bam you have a dinner, instead of spending 30 or more minutes to cut, clean and cook a meal.

You may not know this, but your food is will actually last longer in a deep freezer (not your freezer attached to your refrigerator). Deep freezers get colder and keep a more regulated temperature than kitchen freezers. For some items it lengthens the freezer life by 4-6 months! Wouldn’t it be great if you had a stock pile of frozen items to last you weeks and months?
